Anime and Conventions
In preparation for the trip to Japan, we thought we'd take a look at one of these "Japanese Culture Festivals" commonly held in the US, better known as an Anime-Con. Nothing says Utaku like spending a whole entire weekend immersed in anime and manga dressed in a costume hanging out in a city convention center with a bunch of other costumed obsessive anime and manga freaks. Unless perhaps you also toss in gamers, cosplay, and a big goth lolly tea party. Hai!

Not to be dissuaded, we perused internet sites related to such displays of tomfoolery. One would think once we located a list of over 130 anime-cons planned for the remainder of the year, we'd be all set in short order but no. The largest oldest in our area, a wonder of anime, cosplay, gaming, and goth lolly splendor, is coming up in a matter of days. We are too late to pick up early tickets, they won't even let you buy in advance of the day on site, and after our last experience of standing in line over three hours for tickets, we aren't really feeling we'd do much better at a con over twice the size of the last fiasco. I can't understand why in the world they won't let people buy the arm bands in advance, as long as they only let in people actually having the arm bands properly fastened, but hey, what do I know? Maybe they were dumb and just purchased plain one color arm bands that are easily duplicated at the nearest party store.

Eventually we located a festival of the surreal in our area still listing advance purchase tickets. Tokyo in Japan has nothing on Tokyo in Tulsa! Yeah! :)

Ok kidding...mostly. Truthfully, my experience of the anime and manga world has been all good. Except maybe the time I arrived at a con in normal street clothing. There is nothing quite as amusing as feeling oddly out of place because you are the only one in the standard issue young person street clothing of semi-popular jean brand and t-shirt.Boy, was that a faux pas! Which brings up a new problem. What is a decidedly fluffy mother of a 15-year-old to wear? I think it is safe to say my years of dressing as the Pink Power Ranger or Sailor Moon (thanks to Welcometomina.wordpress.com for the picture) are over. Ah well. Perhaps I will just do the mom-op-out and devote my time to pressing up my daughter's costume instead. She's got the absolute cwootie cutest long pink lacy goth lolly costume you ever saw! But shhhhh! Don't tell her I said that, I'm sure she thinks she is just SO avant-garde and not at all adorable in a way that makes little old ladies want to just pinch her lil cheeks like crazy! -*ebil grin*-

Wonders never cease! Dear Hubs has just suggested we make this a family trip. I got the look when I suggested we do him up as a great humanization of Pikachu. I leave you with this picture of his reply.
