Went to Tokyo in Tulsa anime con and must say it was an extraordinary experience. Overall, the whole thing was well done. Lots of activities suitable for the younger set at all hours. Nothing like wearing them down well for the parents to make it a good weekend for all. I overheard more than once the older set politely shoving the younger set back to the planned activities vs allowing them to slip into the older set's party rooms and such. I had the distinct impression this line of behavior had been heavily enforced by the heads of the con, something I applaud. The hotel was older, but newly remodeled and our room was very clean, even in the odd nooks and crannies. I wasn't impressed with the dinner offerings at the hotel cafe, but suspect they were attempting to cater to the largest part of the participant audience with burgers, chicken fingers, and the like. The breakfasts were absolutely excellent (and believe me when I say there are just SO many ways to ruin breakfast, unlikely as that sounds).
The panels were often unusual and mostly very informative or at least amusing. Projectors seemed to be a big issue, when they were available, often the presenters couldn't seem to get them up and running. The panelists were a very mixed lot, with all sorts of online comic artists and writers, several very notable animation personalities, and assorted technical personalities in related industries. Samantha Inoue-Harte was an absolute joy, and is obviously very talented. David Brehm and his lovely wife, Stephanie Young, were very friendly and amusing, and they gave an informative panel. The dinner with the guests offered in the Sakura pack was absolute genius, and was much enjoyed by my daughter and her friend (pictures of her in her cute pink sailor suit I whipped together for her the night before the trip to follow in a later post, as soon as I can yank the digital camera from her grasp LOL!) The worst thing about the con was how much it made me want to go back to looking at information about Japan and planning that vacation to Japan.
